Reimagining Mental Health Care in Kenya: Edwin Mburu’s Partnership with GPS

Edwin’s journey of healing began in 2015, and it was peer support that saved him when he felt the lowest. This experience inspired him to create Mentally Unsilenced, a grassroots movement dedicated to breaking stigma and providing community-driven support. Edwin knows firsthand the power of being understood and supported by those who have walked similar paths.

Challenges

In Kenya, mental health care is often inaccessible and misunderstood. Suicide remains criminalized, and stigma runs deep—impacting patients, families, and even healthcare providers. With just one major mental health hospital, over a century old, and approximately 100 psychiatrists for a population exceeding 50 million, access to care is a privilege few can afford.

When individuals are in crisis, they often have nowhere to turn. Edwin asks a haunting question: “If someone is in crisis and can’t function, what do they do?” For many, the answer is disheartening. Support is limited to religious or community leaders, where mental health struggles are often dismissed as witchcraft or moral failings.

Edwin was not content with merely addressing the symptoms of Kenya’s mental health crisis—he wanted to transform the system entirely. His vision is clear: a country where people have access to compassionate, peer-driven mental health care, free of judgment and stigma.

“I want GPS to come to where I live. People are languishing because they can’t access mental health care,” Edwin shares passionately. “If they acquire basic peer support, we can modify and customize it and bring in community leaders.” Edwin’s vision is one of inclusion, where mental health care is tailored to the realities of life in Kenya.  However, the journey is fraught with challenges:

  • Stigma: Cultural and societal stigma often prevents people from seeking help.
  • Limited Resources: Lack of funding and infrastructure hinders the development of effective programs.
  • Religious and Cultural Barriers: Deeply rooted beliefs often attribute mental health conditions to supernatural causes.

Experience

When GPS learned about Edwin’s work, we recognized a kindred spirit—someone who, despite limited resources, was already making a profound impact. Together, we are forging a partnership that combines Edwin’s lived experience and grassroots knowledge with GPS’s expertise in peer support.

  1. Championing Cultural Relevance: By engaging community leaders, Edwin aims to dismantle harmful stereotypes and foster a broader understanding of mental health.
  2. Empowering Through Training: Edwin participated in GPS’s Facilitator Training and Certification program, customizing the curriculum to reflect Kenya’s unique needs. Edwin’s insights will shape a manual tailored to address challenges such as alcohol dependency and culturally specific barriers.
  3. Building Community Models: Edwin is bringing GPS to communities in Kenya through a community-driven peer support framework that integrates with existing cultural and societal structures.

Impact & Transformation

Edwin’s passion is infectious. He believes that real change begins with connection—meeting people where they are and helping them feel seen, heard, and valued. His work with Mentally Unsilenced is already touching lives, proving that peer support has the power to save and transform.

He dreams of a future where no one has to hit rock bottom before finding help, where mental health care is as accessible and accepted as any other health service. Through his partnership with GPS, that future is closer than ever.

Edwin’s story is one of courage and resilience. He has turned his struggles into a mission to help others survive and thrive. As he journeys to heal others, Edwin continues to heal himself, finding purpose and joy in the lives he touches. “If talking on the phone will keep you from experiencing what I did, will help you heal, I’ll do it,” he says, embodying the heart of peer support.

The collaboration between Edwin Mburu and GPS represents a promising step toward a more inclusive and accessible mental health system in Kenya. Edwin’s dedication, coupled with the support of like-minded organizations, has the potential to create a lasting impact, touching countless lives and reshaping perceptions of mental health in Kenya. With his courage and compassion, and the support of GPS, Edwin is proving that no one has to face the journey alone.
